A la suite d'un séjour au bord du lac Walden entre 1845 et 1847, Thoreau développe une conscience écologique aiguë le menant à questionner le droit de propriété des forêts et à promouvoir la préservation de la nature sauvage. Cette expérience est à l'origine de son oeuvre maîtresse «Walden» ainsi que de nombreux écrits où il fustige l'esprit commercial et la société industrielle.
